For our first session, Mr mike gave us the project brief and online of the module. The minor Project requires us to collaborate with different majors. We were then given a list of projects to choose from.

  • Improved Attendance System
  • Mud card: Feedback System
  • Location-based Advertisement
  • LPG Ordering System
  • Accessible Education (Local)
  • Education of Autism

Lecture 02
10/09/20 (Week 2)

This week Mr mike introduced us to Miro. He taught us how we are utilizing the app to collaborate with groupmates and discuss our ideas.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT

Week 1
27th August 2020

After Mr. Mike briefed us about the different projects available we were asked to choose one project that we would like to work on. The education for Autism project appealed to me the most so I decided to join this project.

Week 2
3rd September 2020

This week Mr mike Introduced us to Miro and asked each group to make one. The platform would be used to collaborate, and monitor progress as we work on the project.

After making a Miro group we decided that the best place to begin would be to do research and find out as much as we can about Autism. We each did our own research

Week 3 - Week 5

we were scheduled to interview a Special Education teacher Cristian. In preparation for the interview, we decided to write up some questions. We each came up with a set of questions.

The interview was very successful. with the knowledge gained, we began to brainstorm ideas for the final product. We also move on to do more research and started filling our Project tracking document.

On Week 5 we got confirmation from Mr mike about our Interview with "Hope". We, therefore, began to create questions.

Fig 1.4 Questions

After getting questions from each member we then compiled the most relevant questions and consulted Mr.Mike. He gave us feedback and confirmed the questions that we had prepared.

Here is the video from our Interview with Michelle, a hope project representative.

Week 6

With the data gathered from the interview, we went on to fill the Project tracking reports. We split our tasks and went to do research in different areas.

Fig 1.6 Research work in Miro

My part for this week was to fill out the Challenge Analysis: "What we like to learn about" .

Fig 1.7 What we learned section

Based on the interview with Michelle we also created a problem statement. here is our problem statement for the project.

Lower to moderate autistic children need to learn how to adapt to a social setting to fit in because adapting to society’s expectations can be challenging for moderate autistic children.

We all brainstormed ideas for an app that would help children in social situations.

Fig 1.8 Ideation Process.

In order to simplify each of us picked an idea and created a prototype for it. I chose a game app that gives different situations that help children learn how to act in the situation. When picking the wrong action, the app will describe how to act in that situation.

Week 7

To start I did research to find whether there were any such similar games available. I was able to find two games, Kloog and MINDS social Skills. these apps had interesting approaches to autistic kids' Social Skills.

After this I decided to have a simple storyline to make it more interesting for the kids could. I made a simple flowchart so I would get the flow of the game.

After this, I began to illustrate the separate scenes of the game. The game would start with the child entering their names and choosing their character. Once this is done they will be taken to an outro that introduces them to the story and objective of the game. As the game proceeds the character will face challenges( social situations) which they have to complete to move forward. They will be presented with choices from which they will have to choose the right one in order to get the reward.

In order to make the prototype more presentable, I decided to compile it in adobe Xd to show the gameplay.

After discussing and going through the different prototypes with Mr. Mike. We finalized to go with my idea for a social skills app.

Here is the Proposal Slides for our Project:

Week 8

We then divided the tasks among ourselves. I took the part of illustrating the scenes and characters. After Arletta and Chelin design the storyboards and character. I started to work on making the characters. Since the task of illustrating the characters in different poses for each scene was going to be very time consuming the task was split between Baahy and me.

Here are some of the works I did.

After I finished illustrating the alien character I moved to combine the characters and environments.

Fig 1.12 Combined scenes.

After all the scenes were done I forward it to Arletta for animation and Final environment designs.

Week 9 - Week 10

We showed our progress to Mr. Mike and he told us that a lot needs to be changed in our design. He wanted us to redesign our characters and also work on color schemes, camera angles, and the scenes. Mr mike also wanted us to conduct more research and find out whether the game would be useful for educating autistic children. So we emailed Michele to get her feedback on the idea and design.

While waiting for her response We started to brainstorm color schemes, art style, and character design.

During this time Michelle replied to the email and she was very positive towards the idea.

Fig 1.14 Response from Michelle.

In the end, we decided to go with a very simple vector art style as it makes animating and illustrating easier. We then went divided the task and began working on the new game designs.

After I received the character sketches from Chelin I started working on illustrating the characters. Here is the character I Illustrated.

Fig 1.15 Illustrated characters and scenes

After I finished Illustrating I helped Arletta with animating some of the scenes. I took over the animation of all the scenes in the Library and School.

Week 11

We got some feedback from Mr. Mike this week. He said the work overall is good but he suggested that we fix the perspective of the backgrounds as it appears a little flat. He also told us to add a helmet on the main character.

With this feedback, I worked on changing the background of the library by adding some perspective to the design.

Fig 1.18 Fixing the Perspective

I then moved on to remaking the Map to match the art style of the game.

Fig 1.19 Redesigned Map

I also worked on refining and completing the animated scenes in school and the library.

Week 12

Since we were due to show our work to Michelle next week. We were told by Mr mike to work faster and finish up all the work quickly. Since we won't be able to complete all the scenes in gameplay format we decided to compile the work until the supermarket to present.

I continued to work on animating the scenes for School and Library. I also added reward sound effects at this stage.

Week 13

We had the presentation with Michelle this week and she was very pleased with the work that we had so far. She gave feedback and we continued working to finish the game.

I continued working on the animation of the scenes. To make the story better I made adjustments to existing illustrations to make it better.

Fig 1.20 Adding and animating hand for "Shh" effect

The next step was to add the dialogues and render the clips to be sent to Ryan for compilation. During the week we also had some discussion to finalize a name for the game. We settled on the final name "Earth Explorer".

Week 14.

With all the design work done I started working on the final presentation with Arletta. Compiling all the work and research we conducted throughout the project.

Here is the Final application walkthourgh.

Here is final Presentation.
