PROJECT 1
Week 09
For Project 1 we were assigned to do a self portrait using any medium of our choice. For this project i wanted to create a realistic and detailed artwork so I chose to use Colored pencils for my piece. I wanted to show my Positive and Joyful Personality through my Piece. I started of my choosing an image for the portrait.

Fig 1.1 Reference image. |
I chose this image because because it portrayed the emotions I wanted to show in artwork. I also liked the highlights on either sides of the face. Before I started to sketch the image I wanted to get an idea of the Placement of the image. So I took it into Photoshop and fit it onto an A4 sheet.

Fig1.2 Image Cropped |
After I cropped out the image I got a rough idea of the where I wanted the Placement to be, after which I Started sketching.
 |
Fig 1.3 Sketch |
After I finished the sketch I started looking for an inspiration for the colors to be used. I had an idea to do give the Portrait a sun-kissed effect. I wanted to use this effect because always try to incorporate some aspects that connects by artworks to the cultures, traditions or Symbols of my country. So for this piece I wanted to portray a famous Phrase used in the the Country "The Sunny Side Life".

I researched on images to see how the effect could be achieved effectively and found some images that had a similar color palette to what I had in mind.
 |
Fig 1.6 Adding light layer of color |
I started out with adding a very light layer of color to identify where to put in the different colors.

Fig 1.9 First Layer for Beard |
After this I presented my work for Feedback and Critique during Class. During the critique Ms Sherry told me that it looks good the way it is now. She suggested that instead of coloring the whole portrait with bright colors I leave some areas white, such as the sunglasses so that it does not take the focus away from the face.

Fig 1.7 Adding shadows to beard and Face |
Week 10
I took Ms Sherry's Advice and added only a slight shadow to the glasses and moved onto adding detail onto the beard and face.
 |
Fig 1.8 Coloring Hair |
After I Finished the beard I move onto Coloring the Hair and adding Shadows to the Face and Neck. Then I started Coloring the final portions of my artwork , the Tank top. I colored it in and then faded out the bottom so that it blended in with the white background around it.
