Lecture 7 - Rhythm, Movement and Harmony.
29/05/19 (Week  09)

The Lecture today was a how Rhythm, Movement and Harmony Define the composition of an artwork.

Rhythm is Defined as a strong, regular pattern of movement or sound  which is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm and Movement are to principle elements that always occur together in design. There are 4 types of Rhythm,
- Linear
- Alternating
- Gradation
- Repetition

Movement is the principle of art which is used to create the impression of action in a work of art. It is often the focal area of an artwork and is the creates a path takes the viewers eyes through the artwork. These movements can be created using lines, shapes, and color.

The final elements Harmony creates a common ground within an artwork and unites the elements within it. Together with Rhythm and Movement they create a Visual Flow in design.

For this weeks exercise we assigned to do a collage. The collage should show either rhythm,Movement or Harmony. I started by doing some research for inspiration on the topic.

Above are some of the images I drew my inspiration from. I was interested in the image of the surfer as it showed a sense of movement through an action.

Using the image started sketching put my design for the artwork.

Sketch of artwork
After sketching it out I moved on to finding magazines with suitable colors. I also changed the angle of the surfboard in order to make the board more visible.

Cutout of surfer
Magazine collage on surfboard
Because I wanted to make the surfer stand out from the background with clean edges, I decided to trace a sketch and cutout the surfer before applying magazine paper on it. This allowed me to get in more detail on the surfer.

I then moved on to creating the background of the artwork. I used newspaper to add some gradient in the background of the artwork.

Adding hair to the surfer
Pasting surfer onto background

After pasting the surfer onto the finished background. I added the hair using yellow magazine paper. I used a blade for this part because to get thin curved strips for the hair. I then decided to add some line using thread around the image to better portray the movement of the surfer and create a visual flow. This also created an added layer of texture on the artwork.

Lecture 6 - Dots, Line, Scale and Size.
15/05/19 (Week  07)

Today's lecture was about how designs can be created using simple lines and dots. Dots are the smallest element in a design, it can create a wide variety of design. Contrast and tension can be created by decreasing the space between dots.

Lines is the most basic concept of drawing. they are an extension of two points and can contract any shape. It is the critical element information of shapes. Line can serve to join two objects or shapes.
and can also articulate the surface of space and show texture. The arrangement of lines can lead the viewer through a work of art and help to create direction.
Vertical Lines Express a state of Equilibrium
- Horizontal Lines show stability
- Diagonal lines show movement and help to make design visually active

Scale is referred to the size of one object in relation to other objects in a design. It helps to create dominance in a design. Difference in scales can help to show movement and dimensions

Size is how big or small an element is. Size helps to make a particular element standout showing Visual Hierarchy. It can help create Focus helping users to scan through content effectively and helps to bring important content to focus.

Our assignment for this week was to create a Artwork using line work or dots. I started looking up artwork done using only lines. I decided to use the scribble line technique for this project. Inspired by artist Erick Centeno

I wanted to link this artwork to something of significance to me, So i started looking for images that represented my culture.

Original image
After some research, I found an image of boy standing on beach wearing the traditional Maldivian outfit, blowing a conch.

With reference to the image I made a rough sketch of the boy to get the placement correctly.

From their I moved to scribble with my pen, Paying attention to to the shadows and highlight of the image. After the scribbling I wanted to add more color to the work. So I added a soft tone of color to significant parts of the image. For this I used a Colored Pencils an soft pastels.

Lecture 5 - Hierarchy, Alignment , Direction and Perspective

08/05/19 (Week  06)

Today's lecture was given by the 5th group and they explained to us the uses of Hierarchy, Alignment ,Direction and Perspective.

Hierarchy is the order in which we process information. There are many different ways that hierarchy can be implemented into design or photography. Increasing the size, Contrast or Proximity of one object in comparison to another object. our attention will be automatically drawn to the bigger object creating a hierarchy.

Alignment is simply how the different elements in a design are lined up. their are 4 types of alignments.
-Horizontal Alignment
-Vertical Alignment
-Edge Alignment
-Center Alignment

Direction is the path which eyes follows when you look at a design.it can either be Horizontal, Vertical or Diagonal.

Perspective, is the art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface so that it gives the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position.

For this weeks assignments we were asked to take photographs that show perspective and edit in Photoshop to emphasize the effect. For this Assignment I wanted to show Perspective in the form of Foreshortening.

Original Image
I took a Photograph of myself with my arms extended and the main focus directed at the tips of my fingers. I then took the photo into Lightroom and adjusted the brightness contrast and changed the image into a B/W image.
Image First edit
I wanted to emphasize the perspective, so i took the image into Photoshop. I added a blur to the background and sharpened the the hands. I also added highlights to the fingertips to Direct the attention onto the center.

Lecture 4 - Surface, Texture, Repetition an Patterns
24/04/19 (Week  04)

Various Paper Surfaces
Today our Lectures was on the Topic Surface, Texture, Repetition an Patterns. This week my group and I were given the task of doing the presentation for this topic. In our presentation we explained Explained how all of the above were connected and all of them put together constitute to the final outcome Patterns.

Surface in art terms is how color is reflected, absorbed or scattered depending upon texture. Texture varies on different types of Papers.

Textures
Texture is the Feel and appearance of the a substance or a surface. Textures can be seen everywhere and can be either man made or natural.

There are two main types of textures- Tactile Textures and Visual Textiles. Tactile Textures can felt and have a physical Quality that can be Felt while Visual Textiles are Implied, They give the illusion of having a real Physical Texture.

Repetition is the recurrence of a particular line, pattern or shape in a single or part of a series. As the definition states it is the Repetition of A single design over and over again that results in the formation of a Pattern

Flow Pattern
When it comes to Patterns there are 3 basic types .

- Flow Patterns is Built on Repetition of Wave like lines It can be found in nature, These can be found all around in roots in the flowing of Water

-Branching Pattern a is a form of Patterning Often seen in the Plant world. Branching Patterns can Usually Seen in Floral Artworks. the Image below shows floral designs made using lacquer, A is traditional Maldivian Art form.

- Spiral Pattern  can be seen from the scale of Galaxies to the opening on flower buds or even in the form of microscopic animals.

Spiral Patterns
Branching Pattern
After the Presentation Miss Sherry told us that the exercise for this week was to create Patterns using things around us an come with a design. I decided that for this Exercise i would try to make patterns that form the traditional Maldivian Design.

Reference
Stencil Cutout
I used a Stencil Cutout to form the circles and to separate  the colors. The Patterns were made using leafs and Acrylic Paint

Final Outcome

I git a lot of Positive Feedback during the Critique on my choice if color and my idea. However Miss Sherry Pointed out that while the Patterns were visible in the design . It did not show any Repetition. She suggested that i try working on a more Repetitive Pattern Design .

I decided that for the second attempt i would use the same concept of leaves but this time use a different technique.

sketch of leaf
cutout of stamp

For this design i decided to make 2 leaf stamps and make prints onto A4. I cutout the shape of a leaf to make a stamp.

Used pattern stamp 1
Used pattern stamp 2
I them used a sponge to print the designs onto the my A4 sheet placing them carefully so that the design did not look to cramped up.

Final Design
Lecture 3 - Symmetry, Asymmetry and Balance.
17/04/19 (Week  03)

We were given a presentation about Symmetry, Asymmetry and balance.

Symmetry is when an Object/ Design Element s Reflected on the opposite axis.in simple terms one half of an object or Design with perfectly match the other half if it was divided into two..

Asymmetry is the complete opposite of Symmetry. This is When the elements are not Proportional and it will not match the other half if divided . each element is its own size and shape and do not mirror one another

Asymmetrical design
Symmetrical design

For this exercise i decided to do a asymmetrical design since we were told use a water colors. I made up my mind to do turtles for this Design.

I Sketched out the turtles and started painting. I first wet my paper with water and then touched the wet areas withe paint allowing it disperse and merge together. This is the technique i used for most part of this painting.

i then did the same for the turtles. For the shells of the turtles instead of painting in the squares i left out the negative space to give the illusion of separation.

I then added darker shades of the colors and added black to create the shadows and highlights.

Lecture 2 - Gestalt
10/04/19 (Week  02)
example of gestalt

Miss Sherry introduced us to Gestalt,It is the use of negative spaces to create objects or design. Gestalt designs are meant to play with your eyes and create an illusion. it appears as one thing but the negative shapes form into something else

My idea for this the design is to show the effects of global warming on animals. i designed a polar bear through the negative spaces.I then created a lighter with a flame under the bear to show the effect of global warming.

sketch of the idea

After i drew it out i noticed that one of the lines looked like a penguin. In order to emphasize on the gestalt i decided to make the lighter out of factory causing pollution.

Final Work

Lecture 1 - Contrast
03/04/19 ( Week 1)

To begin with Miss Sherry started of with an exercise so that we got to know each other better. We did an activity where we were supposed to write a little about ourselves on a piece of paper and see whether we had anything in common with the person sitting beside us. We then proceeded to do sketches of each other and later hung our work to be critiqued . Miss Sherry explained to us that critique was going to part of classes and this will give us an idea about how critiques will be conducted.

We were then given a lecture about Contrast.how contrast is created with through shapes, colors, textures, and angles. We were shown examples of Contrast, followed by a briefing about our next exercise.

We were told to create a piece of work using black paper cutouts pasted on a white A4 Sheet. The work should show visual contrast .

I had the idea of tiny manta rays cutouts on big manta as soon as miss Sherry Mentioned paper cutouts, and proceeded to sketch it out. i searched up online for reference photo and found one my a local maldivian photographer that gave me an idea for my sketch.

Initial Sketch

I then proceeded to make the cutout of the Manta Ray on Black paper.

First Attempt

After Cutting out the Manta Rays i placed them onto the paper to see the outcome. i thought that piece looked a little plain and incomplete and so i proceeded to add more details.

2nd Attempt
After placing the 2nd attempt, I thought the waves made the whole piece feel a little congested and took away from the Manta Ray.
